Kamchatka
Kamchatka in the Russian Far East is the largest peninsula of East Asia – 472,300 km² and 1,250 km long.
The peninsula separates the Bering Sea from the Sea of Okhotsk; its natural southern extension is the Kuril Islands and the Japanese archipelago. Its largest city, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, lies in Avacha Bay, the largest natural harbour in the world.
Among its natural wonders are 160 volcanoes, 29 of them still active and 19 listed as World Heritage. The highest is Klyuchevskaya Sopka at 4,750 m. The Valley of the Geysers in the centre of the peninsula is the only formation of its kind on the Eurasian continent.
The peninsula is home to many rare species – including the Kamchatka brown bear, cherished by many hunters.
