Hunting in Hungary · 15 April – 30 September
Roebuck
The Hungarian roe deer is a unique quadruped that put our country on the map all over the world.
Capreolus capreolus
Nowadays more and more hunters arrive from overseas to obtain a trophy. Trophy size differs across hunting areas depending on where the game lives. In Transdanubia average trophy weights are good (250–400 g), but capital heads over 500 g also occur.
The biggest curiosities are taken in Szolnok, Békés, Hajdú and Szabolcs counties, where stock density is a multiple of that in Transdanubia. If the winter weather is favourable, several roebucks are taken each year with trophies over 500 – and not rarely over 600 – grams.
We offer this hunt in two seasons. The first runs from 15 April to about 20 May, when the growing vegetation makes cover almost complete and the animal becomes hard to spot. The other, preferred by older and more experienced hunters, is the rut at the end of July and beginning of August, when even the most secretive old bucks can be called in with a whistle.
Roe hunting can be done from an off-road vehicle – for example on the Great Plain, where large areas must be covered – as well as by stalking, from a high seat or from a horse-drawn carriage in wooded areas.
