Hunting in Hungary · 1 October – end of February
Pheasant
The most important small game species – both on rough shoots and on classic driven days.
Phasianus colchicus
Pheasants are reared and hunted almost everywhere in the country, but the most significant areas are on the Great Plain and in Somogy, Heves, Nógrád and Szabolcs counties.
Rough shooting – one of the most popular forms, where 2–8 guns with dogs and a few companions work small patches of rough grass, tree lines and reed beds. The bag can reach 50–200 birds a day.
Driven shooting – the classic form, with 6–15 guns, numerous beaters and well-trained dogs. The guns take their pegs and the beaters drive the birds over the line. Loaders may assist, as hunting often takes place with two guns. Bags of 500–1,000 birds a day are possible.
