Brown hare
The most tiring – and the most active – of the small game hunts, at home on the Great Plain.
Lepus europaeus
The brown hare is widespread across Europe except in permanently snow-covered regions. It can be found everywhere in Hungary, though numbers are small in big-game areas; its real home is the Great Plain.
On hare shoots 10–20 guns and at least as many beaters surround areas of 100–200 hectares. The best known forms are line driving and U-shaped or circular driving. On rich ground, with precise organisation, 200–300 hares a day can be taken.
The hunt combines well with other small game: hare, pheasant or the persistently lying fox make for an exciting, very active day. The most significant hare grounds are in Békés, Csongrád, Heves and Szolnok counties.
