Wild goose

The close of the small game season: morning and evening flights along the Danube, the Tisza and the Dráva.

Anser albifrons / fabalis

Bean geese and white-fronted geese may be shot on the morning and evening flight, four birds per hunter per day. Unlike ducks, geese spend the night on the water and set off in large flocks at dawn to feed on stubble and young crops, returning to open water in the evening.

In foggy weather the geese fly much lower and can be taken more easily even during the day. The main season runs from the end of November to mid-January.

On stubble the birds are shot from pits prepared in advance; along the shores hunters use hides well covered with reed. Outstanding goose grounds in Hungary are the Danube, the Tisza and the Dráva, as well as the larger fish ponds, the Hortobágy, Fehértó and Lake Velence.
