Red deer stag

The most important Hungarian game, the crowned king of our forests, attracting thousands of hunters to Hungary every year.

Cervus elaphus

Returning guests cannot escape the magic of the autumn forest, and young beginners like following the legends. This well-known game lives in two decisive parts of the country: the whole of Transdanubia and the forests of the Northern Mountains.

The size of the famous crown is influenced by the natural endowments of the habitat and by careful game management. The southern and western parts of Transdanubia (Baranya, Somogy and Zala counties) can be proud of an excellent stock, where trophies over 12 kg are not rare in the annual bag. In several Transdanubian counties it is possible to take stags with 10–12 kg trophies.

Stags living in the Northern Mountains carry lighter trophies on average, but animals with 8–9 kg heads can be taken easily there as well.

The main season is the rut, which starts at different times in different areas: in southern counties the roaring can be heard at the end of August, in the north only from mid-September. Stags are hunted by stalking, from a high seat or from a carriage. Calling in the selected stag with a bugle is an unforgettable experience.
